Wondering With Weldy
President Gilbert Weldy
Have you been wondering what I have been wondering about? That is what I promised, to wonder about some things that are important to us. I hope that you have been doing some wondering too.
One of the things that we all wonder about are the scary
predictions about how our climate is changing. I wonder how
our globe can really be getting warmer. Many of us saw Al
Gore's film on this subject, and the evidence he presented
was very impelling and convincing. I wonder, can our climate
really get warmer - and warmer - and warmer? How will it
affect our quality of life? To be sure, most of us will not
be residing here on this warming globe by the time the
climate really changes and affects human life.
In March next year, the Rotary Clubs of Northern Indiana, District 6540, will be sponsoring a "World Affairs Conference" for high school students from this area. This is a project which will bring 2000 of our brightest and best high school students to nine different sites, one of them being Manchester College. We will expect up to 200 students here.
If we were high school students, I am sure that we would be wondering, maybe worrying, about how these climactic changes might affect our lives. These present-day high school students are surely wondering about how they can can adjust and cope with the changes that are coming.
So what are we to do? Surely we don't want to leave a contaminated, unhealthy world to the generations that will follow us.
We don't need to wonder about who is responsible for our warming globe, our filthy air, our polluted rivers and lakes. We are! We are responsible for clean air and water. How will the nations of the world respond to this frightening crisis? It will require all the diplomatic, political, scientific, and economic efforts of the people of the world. Nations are stirring. The United Nations is deliberating. We wonder if it will be accomplished. We can only hope so.
